Rickie Fowler and Rory McIlroy are among the PGA Tour stars looking to rebound from major disappointment this week at the 2023 Travelers Championship in Cromwell, Conn. The latest PGA Tour elevated event tees off Thursday at TPC River Highlands, with the world’s top players making the cross-country trip from the U.S. Open. Wyndham Clark comes in after winning the major championship in Los Angeles, but McIlroy finished one stroke back as he sought his first major title in almost a decade. Fellow fan favorite Fowler, seeking first of his career, led entering the final day but shot 75 and tied for fifth. Now they will be part of another loaded PGA Tour field that features the top eight players in the world. No. 1 Scottie Scheffler finished third in L.A., two strokes behind McIlroy, while second-ranked Jon Rahm and No. 6 Xander Schauffele also posted top-10 finishes. Schauffele won the 2022 Travelers Championship at 19 under par.
Caesars Sportsbook lists Scheffler as the 6-1 favorite in its latest 2023 Travelers Championship odds. Patrick Cantlay (9-1), McIlroy (10-1), Rahm (10-1) and Schauffele (12-1) also are favorites in the 2023 Travelers Championship field. Fowler and Clark are 40-1 longshots, well behind the likes of Viktor Hovland (20-1), Tommy Fleetwood (22-1) and Tony Finau (25-1). Before locking in any 2023 Travelers Championship picks or PGA Tour bets, make sure you see the Travelers Championship 2023 predictions and best bets from golf betting and fantasy expert Sia Nejad.
Nejad specializes in betting and DFS in golf, among other sports. He’s had incredible success in the outright and first-round leader markets and betting head-to-head matchups. At the Wells Fargo, he had Clark among his longshot outrights, backing the 75-1 shot before he dominated at Quail Hollow for his first PGA Tour victory.
In 2022, Nejad hit six first-round leaders in a 12-week span while peppering in tournament outrights throughout the year. In 2023, Sportsline debuted “The Early Wedge,” and in the first three months of the show, he hit two FRLs and three outright winners. Nejad also had a winning head-to-head record in eight of 10 weeks (including full tournament sweeps on head-to-head plays). He was up more than 70 units over that three-month span.
Now, Nejad has focused his attention on the 2023 Travelers Championship field and has locked in his best bets, top sleepers and favorites to avoid. See who they are at SportsLine.
Top 2023 Travelers Championship expert picks
Scheffler is the favorite and comes off three consecutive top-three finishes, but Nejad is fading him again in the outright market. “That number is simply way too short in this designated field,” Nejad says, and the expert wants more value. And given Scheffler’s often-balky putter, which has prevented from winning since March, the expert is looking elsewhere. Scheffler has played River Highlands three times, and a tie for 13th last year was his best finish. He also could ease off a little after a long trip, on the heels of a close call in pursuit of his second career major title.
One player Nejad sees value in this week is Hovland, who has been as consistent as anyone. The Norwegian has 13 top-25 finishes in 17 outings, including 19th place at the U.S. Open, and seven top-10’s. The 25-year-old won the Memorial three weeks ago. He also tied for 11th at the Travelers in his last appearance in 2020, and his short game and solid putting make this course a good fit. Hovland ranks fifth on tour in scoring average (69.48) thanks to his accuracy with every club. He ranks fourth in total driving and sixth in proximity to the hole, and River Highlands rewards precision. See who to pick at SportsLine.
How to make 2023 Travelers Championship golf picks
Nejad has locked in his best bets for the 2023 Travelers Championship and is picking his longshots, including one who is priced well above 100-1. This golfer “has shown an ability to get the putter going while also striking the ball well,” Nejad says, and he just might stun this elite field. You can only see the picks at SportsLine.
