It’s anyone’s tournament to win this week on the PGA Tour, and a Masters invitation is on the line for many golfers in the 2023 Valero Texas Open field. J.J. Spaun is the defending champion, and he needs to win to get into the Masters. His victory was the first of his PGA Tour career, and another debut victory could be in the cards this week. If you know who might secure it, you can win big with your 2023 Valero Texas Open fantasy picks. The 2023 Valero Texas Open tees off Thursday at TPC San Antonio, and players like Rickie Fowler, Matt Kuchar and Davis Riley also need a victory to book a trip to Augusta. Others, like Tyrrell Hatton, Hideki Matsuyama and Corey Conners, have their tickets but will be chasing victory nonetheless.
Hatton is the 13-1 favorite in the latest 2023 Valero Texas Open odds from Caesars Sportsbook, followed by Conners (17-1) and Fowler (20-1). Hatton ranks 17th in the world, the highest in the field, so is he a clear choice to anchor your Valero Texas Open fantasy picks? Would a talented player who is chasing a first PGA Tour victory, like Taylor Montgomery (28-1) or Davis Riley (34-1), put you in a stronger position to win? Before setting your fantasy golf rankings or making any 2023 Valero Texas Open picks, you need to see the fantasy golf projections and lineup advice from SportsLine fantasy expert Jim Holliman.
Holliman has been a writer and editor for nearly 25 years and has been playing and following the game closely for more than three decades. The Florida-based writer knows what it takes to win on the PGA Tour and how the players’ games fit the courses. Holliman has been on a roll since last season. At the Valspar, he had high hopes for Taylor Moore (50-1), even though he hadn’t finished higher than 35th in his previous three outings. Holliman saw something in his third-round 65 at the Players and said Moore “could go low this week.” The 29-year-old shot 67 in Sunday’s final round for his first PGA Tour victory.
At the Players Championship, he was all over Scottie Scheffler to win at 10-1, ranking him as his top choice despite the golfer’s lack of previous success at TPC Sawgrass. And at Bay Hill, 11 of his picks finished in the top 15 and three of his top seven posted top-five finishes. The golf expert also was behind Chris Kirk as winner at the Honda, backing the 25-1 shot to get his first victory since 2015. Anyone who has followed Holliman’s predictions is way up on their golf picks.
Now, Holliman has ranked his top golfers from the 2023 Valero Texas Open field. You can only see his fantasy golf rankings and Valero Texas Open picks at SportsLine.

One player Holliman is backing is Fowler, who won’t want to miss the Masters for a second straight year. The 34-year-old ranks 59th in the world, and only the top 50 get spots at Augusta. That means a victory is his only way in, but Holliman says “he is playing well enough to get it.” Fowler has five career victories. He upset Jon Rahm last week in Austin, and his only match play loss was to Billy Horschel. Fowler has finished in the top 25 in five of his past six tournaments. He also has been in the top 20 in two of his three appearances in San Antonio.
On the other hand, the expert is fading Conners, who is one of the favorites but has rarely been a true contender. The Canadian has finished in the top 25 in six of his eight tournaments this season but doesn’t have a finish in the top 10. Conners won at TPC San Antonio in 2019, but that was his only top-10 in four tries. Conners ranks 151st on tour in strokes gained putting, and if he heats up with the flat stick he can make a run. But he was outside the top 50 in three of four events before the WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play and finished behind finalist Cameron Young in his group there.
