Sam Burns pulled off an epic rally before the wind picked up Sunday and went on to win last year, and it might be another wild week at the 2023 Charles Schwab Challenge. Burns shot 5-under 65 at Colonial Country Club in 2022 and had to wait two hours to learn he made a playoff with Scottie Scheffler. Burns drained a 38-foot putt from off the green on the first playoff hole to win, capping a day that saw wind gusts up to 30 mph. Scheffler and Burns will both be teeing off Thursday as part of a strong field that also features Jordan Spieth, Viktor Hovland and Collin Morikawa. There are plenty of elite golfers for you to consider for your 2023 Charles Schwab Challenge fantasy golf picks.
Scheffler, back to world No. 1 after his runner-up finish at the PGA Championship, is the 4-1 favorite in Caesars Sportsbook’s 2023 Charles Schwab Challenge odds. Could Hovland (14-1), who shared that runner-up spot with Scheffer, bring better value for your Charles Schwab Challenge 2023 fantasy golf picks? Tony Finau (14-1) and Max Homa (22-1) both have two victories this season, so could they put you in a better position to win? Before setting your fantasy golf rankings or making any 2023 Charles Schwab Challenge picks, you need to see the fantasy golf projections and lineup advice from SportsLine fantasy expert Jim Holliman.
playing and following the game closely for more than three decades. The Florida-based writer knows what it takes to win on the PGA Tour and how the players’ games fit the courses. Holliman was on fire on his picks for last week’s PGA Championship. The top three finishers at Oak Hill were all among his top five picks. He also knew Jon Rahm “could end up in trouble at times” with his wayward drives before the world No. 1 finished T-50. As for winner Brooks Koepka, Holliman said “he can beat anyone when stakes are high.” He certainly proved that when he won by two strokes for his fifth major victory.
Holliman has been on a roll all season. He was all over Jason Day (+1800) as a top contender at the Byron Nelson before the Australian’s first victory in more than five years. He also nailed Tony Finau (+850) as his top choice at the Mexico Open, and longshot play Eric Cole (+10000) posted a top-five finish. The expert also had Rahm (+750) No. 1 before his Masters victory and backed Scheffler (+1000) to win the Players Championship. Anyone who has followed Holliman’s predictions is way up on their golf picks.
Now, Holliman has ranked his top golfers from the 2023 Charles Schwab Challenge field. You can only see his fantasy golf rankings and Charles Schwab Challenge picks at SportsLine.
2023 Charles Schwab Challenge fantasy golf picks
Holliman knows Morikawa is having a tough year, but the expert is backing him to find success this week at Colonial. The 26-year-old already has two major championships among his five career victories, and he’s one of the most precise players on tour. Morikawa tied for 26th at the PGA, but a third-round 74 cost him. Still, the California native leads the tour in strokes gained approach and ranks seventh in greens in regulation percentage. He also is sixth in driving accuracy, and on this course, precision is paramount. If Morikawa makes his putts, Holliman knows he can win.
On the other hand, Holliman is steering well clear of Burns and barely ranks the defending champ in his top 10. Burns is strong off the tee and is one of the best putters in the game, but his irons let him down consistently. The 26-year-old ranks 165th in green in regulation and 130th in strokes gained tee to green. Burns might draw some confidence from his return to Fort Worth, but he went 14-over par in missing the cut at Oak Hill last week. Only 12 players in the field had a worse score. Burns has been outside the top 25 in more than half of his events (nine of 16). You can see who else to back this week at SportsLine.
