The third major of the 2023 golf season continues Friday with the controversy swirling behind the scenes taking a backseat to what has already been a fantastic start to the 2023 U.S. Open at Los Angeles Country Club. With the venue hosting the national championship for the first time in 75 years, history has already been made with 54 holes left to play.
Rickie Fowler and Xander Schauffele, out with the morning wave Thursday, shocked the golf world by making U.S. Open history with matching 8-under 62s. The scores tied the all-time low round at a major set by Branden Grace in the 2017 Open Championship while rocketing Fowler and Schauffele to the top of the leaderboard.
Not to be outdone, Dustin Johnson and Rory McIlroy rode momentum in the afternoon to climb as close as they could get to the co-leaders. D.J. sniffed 7 under before a late bogey brought him back two of Fowler and Schauffele, while McIlroy sat at 6 under for most of the back nine only to give one away by whiffing a chip before draining a clutch bogey putt at the last to sit three behind the leaders.
