The PGA Tour makes its way to TPC Deere Run in Silvis, Illinois for the 2023 John Deere Classic. For the second straight week, the tour will put on a non-elevated event, leading to a slightly diminished field as the Scottish Open and Open Championship loom. Still, there is a great deal of talent on display, including 2022 winner J.T. Poston. The 2023 John Deere Classic field also includes six previous winners, and one top-20 player in Cameron Young.
Denny McCarthy (14-1) is the favorite in the latest 2023 John Deere Classic odds, followed by Young (16-1), and Russell Henley (18-1). In addition to the top players, does a young player like 20-year-old Gordon Sargent (70-1) project as a valuable inclusion among your 2023 John Deere Classic fantasy golf picks? Before you consider your 2023 John Deere Classic fantasy golf picks or PGA Tour bets, you have to see the John Deere Classic fantasy rankings from SportsLine handicapper Eric Cohen.
Cohen is an avid golf bettor who correctly predicted the pre-tournament outright winner of last week’s Rocket Mortgage Classic (Rickie Fowler, +1400), 2023 PGA Championship (Brooks Koepka +2000), 2023 Honda Classic (Chris Kirk +3500), 2022 Open Championship (Cameron Smith +2200), 2022 U.S. Open (Matt Fitzpatrick +2500), and 2022 Phoenix Open (Scottie Scheffler’s first career victory +2800).
He is a daily contributor to SportsLine’s YouTube Show “Early Edge in 5” and is a guest on “The Early Wedge” SportsLine YouTube golf show hosted by Jonathan Coachman. Cohen also has correctly predicted three correct finishing position parlays in May/June on SportsLine’s Early Edge in 5 on YouTube. 2023 John Deere Classic expert picks
One player Cohen loves is Denny McCarthy. He is the betting favorite for a reason, and Cohen believes he “is primed for his first PGA Tour win.” McCarthy’s putter has been on fire this season, leading the PGA Tour in putting inside 10 feet (91.77%) and ranking in the top 12 on tour in strokes gained: putting (0.784), one-putt percentage (43.68%), and scramble rate (65.36%). McCarthy is near the top of the tour in overall strokes gained, and he has ranked in the top 10 in three of his last six tournaments, with top-30 finishes in two majors this season.
On the flip side, the expert is fading Ludvig Aberg. Cohen believes in Aberg’s talent, especially with regard to the future, but sees better value elsewhere. The Texas Tech product has never finished in the top 20 of a PGA Tour field. Last week, Aberg showed flashes before succumbing to a weekend swoon and landing with a T40 finish. Cohen believes in Aberg’s game off the tee, but notes that he “needs to sharpen his other areas to win.” See all of Cohen’s picks at SportsLine.
