Distance will be the name of the game at Vidanta Vallarta at the PGA Tour’s 2023 Mexico Open, which tees off Thursday. And while the Mexico Open 2023 field is weak, there are plenty of bombers set to tee up in Nuevo Vallarta. The headliner is world No. 1 Jon Rahm, the reigning Masters champion who also happens to be the defending tournament champ. But big hitters like Wyndham Clark, Gary Woodland, Byeong Hun An and Cameron Champ could give him a run for his money. Tony Finau is one of the few other players in the Mexico Open field with a victory this season, and many golfers are seeking a first career win. So, which players should you be targeting for your 2023 Mexico Open fantasy picks?
Rahm is a huge favorite at +290 in the Mexico Open odds at Caesars Sportsbook, followed by Finau at +850. Will either of the only top-20 golfers in the field be worth the price to anchor your 2023 Mexico Open fantasy lineups? The long, open layout favors the big hitters, and Rahm is among them, but Clark (+2100) and Woodland (+3200) both average more than 310 yards off the tee. Can they challenge for the title and put you in position to win this week? Before setting your fantasy golf rankings or making any 2023 Mexico Open picks, you need to see the fantasy golf projections and lineup advice from SportsLine fantasy expert Jim Holliman.
Holliman has been a writer and editor for nearly 25 years and has been playing and following the game closely for more than three decades. The Florida-based writer knows what it takes to win on the PGA Tour and how the players’ games fit the courses. Holliman has been on a roll since last season. He nailed last week’s Masters, backing Rahm as his top choice, despite his uninspired run at Match Play. “The Spaniard wants a green jacket badly. Who doesn’t?,” Holliman said. “But Rahm will get it at some point, and I expect it to be this year.” The Spaniard showed how much he wanted it, storming to a four-shot victory and his second major title.
At the Players Championship, he was all over Scheffler to win at 10-1, and at Bay Hill, 11 of his picks finished in the top 15 and three of his top seven posted top-five finishes. The golf expert also was behind Chris Kirk at the Honda, backing the 25-1 shot to get his first victory since 2015. Anyone who has followed Holliman’s predictions is way up on their golf picks.
Now, Holliman has ranked his top golfers from the 2023 Mexico Open field. You can only see his fantasy golf rankings and Mexico Open picks at SportsLine.
2023 Mexico Open fantasy golf picks
One thing Holliman is confident in is that Finau can get back on track this week at Vidanta. He isn’t among the biggest hitters in this field, but he averages more than 300 yards off the tee and will be one of the strongest all-around players. The Utah native’s results haven’t lived up to his stats lately, but he does have a Houston Open victory on his season resume. Finau gains the most strokes on tour on approach and is in the top 50 off the tee and putting. He shot 8-under 63 in the final round last year and ranks fifth on tour in scoring average this season at 69.29.
On the other hand, Rahm’s price is just too high, so Holliman is slightly fading the player who is clearly the class of the field. It typically takes some time for major winners to get back in the winner’s circle. Scottie Scheffler didn’t win another tournament last season after his Masters victory. Holliman doesn’t suggest the same will be true for Rahm, but defending a tournament title is never easy. The 28-year-old is almost certain to be in the mix – he tied for 15th at the RBC Heritage after his emotional win at Augusta – but a victory will be the only way to justify his price. You can see who else to back this week at SportsLine.
How to set your 2023 Mexico Open golf rankings
For the Mexico Open 2023, Holliman is backing several longshots, including one golfer in his top 10 who comes in at well over 80-1 odds. This golfer is excellent off the tee and on long-range approach shots, so Holliman thinks he can stun this field if he makes his putts.
