The 2023 U.S. Open has arrived with four days of pristine golf ahead at Los Angeles Country Club. Hosting the nation’s championship for the first time in 75 years, LACC is going to be filled to the brim with the best golfers in the game as well as plenty of celebrities hoping to get a glimpse at the third major of the season.
The expectation entering this 123rd playing of the U.S. Open was that Scottie Scheffler, Jon Rahm and Brooks Koepka would duel over 72 holes with the rest of the start-studded field looking up at them. However, as anyone who watches major championship golf knows, expectations are rarely reality when there are this many quality golfers pining for shares of a $20 million purse with a $3.6 million winner’s payout.
Case in point: Rickie Fowler and Xander Schauffele, out with the morning wave, shocked the golf world by making U.S. Open history with matching 8-under 62s. The scores tied the all-time low round at a major set by Brenden Grace in the 2017 Open Championship while rocketing Fowler and Schauffele to the top of the leaderboard well clear of their peers.
