The first thing that stood out to me about the Maxfli Straightfli golf balls is the new dimple pattern. It’s a unique look, and it’s noticeable even when standing over the ball.
I tested the Maxfli Straightfli on the golf course for a few rounds to get a real idea if this golf ball is a good fit for my game and who it can help. You can read my complete review below, but the very short takeaway for me is this…
From a distance perspective, the ball is strong. From a feel perspective, it’s not my favorite.
Maxfli Straightfli Features
The Maxfli Straightfli is not a new addition to the Maxfli lineup, but it was recently modified. We tested the 2023 version of the Straightfli to get a look at the features of this new golf ball.
Two Piece Distance Golf Ball
The Maxfli Straightfli golf ball is designed to be both long and, as the name suggests, straight. Straight distance often comes from a two piece low spin design, and that’s exactly what the Straightfli offers. Two piece golf balls are almost always slightly lower in compression because of the materials used to create the ball.
I would call the Straightfli a mid compression ball (compression rating 85), which is good for golfers with mid swing speed. The SoftFli is the lower compression option from Maxlfli.
Next Generation Core
The Maxfli Straightfli features a new Next Generation Core that is purely for distance. The core is large, designed to maximize ball speeds and help increase total roll as well.
The idea was to improve on both carry and total distance for the average golfer.
Cube Octahedron Dimple Design
I was playing golf with my husband when I tested the Straightfli. He was standing a few feet from me while I lined up to hit a tee shot and said, “What is that dimple pattern?” That’s how unique this one is – you don’t even have to be the one playing it to see it!
The cube octahedron design (pictured above) has 374 large and small dimples. The pattern is designed to help optimize launch and create more lift. I noticed this and found it helpful in some situations, but not all.
Larger Alignment Aid
The side of the Maxfli Straightfli has an enhanced alignment aid. The dark green color is easy to see, and you can use it for tee box or greenside alignment.
Maxfli Straightfli Performance
The Maxfli StraightFli had some really good performance on the course when it came to distance. I don’t normally play with a two piece distance golf ball, but I can tell you that this ball made me see why someone would.
Price
Pricing here is really fair for what you get. Overall, Maxfli does a good job with its golf ball pricing and ensures that you are getting a good value for the golf ball that you play with.
Would it be great if this were a three piece ball for the price? Sure. However, I think the Straightfli is priced right where it should be.
Feel and Sound
I’ll have to break this down into feel off the tee and feel around the greens…
Off the tee, I like the feel of the Maxfli Straightfli. Although Maxfli calls this a soft ball, when you hit it off the tee, it feels strong like you made a good connection and it will travel a long way.
The sound is great. I think it had a similar feel to the other two piece golf balls I have tried from Vice, Titleist, and Callaway.
The feel around the green was not overly soft. In fact, I would have liked it to be just a little softer. I didn’t think I would be saying this, but a slightly more responsive cover would have been a better fit because the ball doesn’t spin much around the green.
The ionomer cover is just not as responsive as urethane.
Spin
The Straightfli from Maxfli has very low spin off the tee – this was a positive for me. I found that the ball did fly straighter because of it, and I can see that being a good fit for golfers that tend to slice their drivers.
Spin on the iron shots was about average. I could not stop the ball nearly as well as I can with a premium three or four-piece golf ball, but the higher ball flight from the Maxfli Straightfli did help the ball stop a little quicker.
Greenside Control
There’s not a ton of greenside control from the Maxfli Straightfli. If you’re a player that struggles to create spin on your golf ball, the Straightfli is certainly not going to help make things easier for you.
If you are good at creating a lot of spin and use high spin wedges, you may be able to get the ball to stop. But basically, you just need to expect a lot of rollout.
Distance
The strong point of the Maxfli Straighfli is certainly the distance. However, there is a caveat here.
I found that the long distance was really noticeable for average swing speed players.
Slower swing speed players may struggle with the mid compression (85) and not be able to fully compress their shots. High swing speed players will hit this ball a little too high. I was hitting my driver higher than I wanted to with this ball.
I blame it on the new dimple pattern doing exactly what it’s supposed to do, but it was not a fit for my long game.
Distance on iron shots was strong. I was impressed with the ability to hit the ball far and straight with the Maxfli Straighfli. I still think that the average swing speed player is the one that will benefit the most.
What I Like About The Maxfli Straightfli
I’m not trying to be overly critical of the Maxfli Straightfli. However, if I were about to buy a dozen of these, this is the honest information I’d want to know. The Maxfli Straightfli certainly has some strong points in addition to its negatives.
Affordability
The two piece Maxfli Straightfli is a fairly priced golf ball. The cover held up fine through a few rounds. As long as you don’t hit a cart path or a tree, you should be able to use a Straightfli for at least three rounds of golf.
Distance
Distance and straight flight technology are strong here. There is no denying the fact that you will hit the ball far. Just remember that the higher swing speed players may find just a little too much lift from the StraightFli off the tee.
Iron Performance
I was pretty happy with the Maxfli Straightfli on my approach shots with my irons. I tried to keep the ball just a little short of the pin so it had time to roll, but overall, the straight and high flight was preferred.
What I Don’t Like About The Maxfli Straightfli
Maxfli Straightfli would fall into the bargain golf ball category, so I can’t be too hard on it from a greenside performance standpoint. I think you have to be smart about what you can expect from a golf ball, and then you can really almost put any golf ball in play.
Greenside Feel and Control
Greenside feel and control are lacking a bit in the Maxfli Straightfli. You can learn to play with this ball, but you must leave plenty of room for the ball to roll out. Even when I was hitting shots off a tight lie with a high spin wedge, the Straightfli struggled to stop from 50 yards and in.
Higher Ball Flight
The higher ball flight wasn’t good from the tee for me. I felt the ball cost me a few yards in roll distance because of the high flight. On approach shots, it’s a good thing. Just think about what your normal tendencies are in your golf game and make sure this is a match.
Overall Rating and Thoughts
I gave the Maxfli Straightfli a 7.5 out of 10. It’s not a golf ball I’m going to be switching to. However, I do feel that when Maxfli refers to this as a long and straight ball, they are advertising it accurately.
I would highly recommend that average swing speed players on a budget looking for a high and long ball flight consider the Straightfli.
